Pool villas in Phuket, from the hills above Kamala to the estates around Laguna and Nai Harn, are built for relaxed indoor-outdoor living. The kitchen is often the centre of that life, so its layout matters.

01

The island kitchen

An island is the most popular choice for open-plan villas. It gives a large prep surface, seating for family and guests, and a clear view across the living room to the pool. Allow generous walkways around it.

02

The peninsula

A peninsula works when the room is narrower or when you want a gentle divide between cooking and living. Bar seating on the living side keeps guests close without crowding the cook.

03

Indoor-outdoor kitchens

Many villa owners add an outdoor kitchen or bar by the pool. Plan the indoor kitchen so the route to the terrace is short and clear, with a fridge and storage for outdoor dining near the door.

04

A separate prep kitchen

In larger villas, a small back kitchen hides washing up and cooking smells, keeping the main kitchen clean for entertaining. It is especially useful for villas with staff or private chefs.

Plan the layout with us

Send us your villa plan and tell us how you entertain. We will propose layout options with walkways and seating marked, so you can compare them easily.

06

Keep swimmers out of the cook zone

In a Phuket pool villa, the busiest route in the house often runs from the pool to the fridge. If that route cuts between the hob and the island, the cook spends the afternoon dodging wet guests. Draw the paths on the plan before choosing a layout: pool to fridge, pool to bathroom, kitchen to dining table.

A good fix is a drinks point at the outer edge of the kitchen. An under-counter fridge, an ice drawer or a glass cupboard at the end of the island, facing the living room, lets people serve themselves. The main fridge, hob and sink stay in a working triangle that guests never need to enter.

Allow around 120 cm where two people pass behind the cook, and choose floor and worktop finishes that do not mind dripping water near the terrace door.

07

Layouts for rental villas

Many Phuket pool villas earn their keep as holiday rentals, and the kitchen has to work for guests who have never seen it before. Simple layouts usually perform best: a clear run of cabinets with the hob, sink and fridge in obvious places, plus an island for serving and casual meals.

Plan storage for the maximum occupancy, not for a couple. If the villa sleeps ten, you need plates, glasses and seating for ten, and a dishwasher large enough to clear a family dinner in one load. A lockable owner's cupboard keeps personal items and spare supplies apart from guest stock.

Housekeepers clean the kitchen after every stay, so avoid deep corners and fussy details that trap dirt. Durable fronts, a hard-wearing worktop and easy-to-wipe handles keep the kitchen looking good in rental photos for longer.

08

Sun, views and the west coast

Villas on Phuket's west coast, around Kamala, Surin and Kata, often face the Andaman Sea and the sunset. That view is why people buy them, but low afternoon sun through large glass doors can heat the kitchen, glare off glossy worktops and fade fronts over time.

Where possible, put the cook facing the view, with the island or peninsula between the kitchen and the glass. Keep the fridge and tall units out of direct sun, because a fridge in a hot spot works harder and uses more power. Matt or textured worktops show less glare than polished ones.

Choose UV-stable fronts and edges, and plan blinds or a deep roof overhang with your architect. A kitchen that is pleasant at five in the afternoon will be used far more than one that is too bright and hot to stand in.

09

Indoors and outdoors in the rainy season

Phuket's southwest monsoon, roughly from May to October, brings days of heavy rain and strong wind, especially on the west coast. An indoor-outdoor layout that works beautifully in high season can become awkward when the terrace stays wet for days.

Make sure the indoor kitchen can do everything on its own, so the outdoor kitchen or bar is a bonus, not a necessity. If the two are linked, a covered route between them keeps trays and guests dry. Fit a mat well or a slightly raised threshold at the terrace door, and avoid timber plinths near the door that could soak up water.

Rain blown sideways through open doors can reach cabinets close to the opening. Leave at least 60 cm between the door and the nearest base unit, or use a water-resistant end panel there.

Questions to answer before choosing

Before comparing layout drawings, write down a few honest answers. How many people stay at peak times, and how many sit down to eat at once? Who cooks most often: you, a private chef or rental guests? Do you cook Thai food with a hot wok and strong smells, which may call for a powerful ducted hood or a separate wok station?

Also decide where bins, recycling and drinking water will go, whether children need a safe place to sit while you cook, and whether laundry has to fit nearby. These details change the layout more than the choice of finish.

With these answers, a kitchen designer can show you two or three layouts that genuinely fit your villa. Send us your villa plan with room measurements and a few photos, and we will start from there.
