Outdoor kitchens for Phuket pool villas

Plan shelter, materials and services so your poolside kitchen survives sun, salt air and the monsoon.

Outdoor kitchen by a pool villa
Blog

Outdoor kitchens are one of the most requested features for pool villas in Phuket, from Kamala and Bang Tao to Rawai and Nai Harn. They are also the most exposed part of the home to sun, salt air and monsoon rain, so good planning matters.

01

Shelter comes first

A roof, pergola or deep overhang protects the cook, the grill and the cabinets. Check where rain blows in during southwest monsoon storms and where the afternoon sun lands, then place the kitchen accordingly.

02

Weatherproof materials

Use marine-grade stainless steel, compact laminate or stone-clad cabinet bodies, and granite or sintered stone worktops. Standard indoor boards and hinges swell and rust quickly outdoors.

03

Water, power and gas

Plan drainage that copes with heavy rain, weatherproof sockets on a safety circuit and a ventilated space for any gas bottle. Decide these before the terrace is tiled.

04

Design for entertaining

A bar counter facing the pool or sea view, a drinks fridge and enough landing space beside the grill turn the outdoor kitchen into the centre of villa life.

05

Send photos of your terrace

Share photos, orientation and any roof structure. We will propose a layout and materials suited to the exact spot.

06

Counter heights and clearances

Outdoor kitchens are often built by eye on site, and small dimension mistakes make them tiring to use. A comfortable working height is 90 to 95 cm, a little higher than many indoor counters if the cook is tall. A raised bar for guests works at around 105 to 110 cm, with a 25 to 30 cm overhang so knees fit underneath.

Leave at least 40 cm of clear worktop on one side of a built-in grill and ideally 60 cm on the other for plates and trays. Allow a counter depth of 65 to 70 cm where the grill drops in, since most built-in grills are deeper than standard kitchen appliances. Keep at least 100 cm of walking space behind the cook, more if the path leads to the pool.

Check the grill maker's required clearances before the counter is built, not after.

07

Appliances that cope with outdoor heat

Afternoon temperatures on a Phuket terrace are well above what most indoor appliances are designed for. A standard fridge placed outside runs almost constantly, struggles to stay cold and may fail early. Choose fridges, ice makers and wine coolers rated for outdoor or high-ambient use, and check that they vent at the front if they are built into a counter.

A built-in grill set into a cabinet may need an insulating jacket or a non-combustible surround, depending on the cabinet material. The gas bottle needs its own ventilated, shaded cabinet with low-level openings, away from the grill's heat.

Plan a separate weatherproof switch or isolator for the outdoor appliances, so the circuit can be turned off when the villa is empty or a storm is coming.

08

Screens and drainage for the southwest monsoon

On Phuket's west coast, from Patong and Kata to Kamala and Bang Tao, the southwest monsoon from around May to October drives rain sideways under roofs that look generous in the dry season. A roof alone may not be enough.

Consider roll-down outdoor blinds, sliding glass panels or a solid wall on the side facing the sea. Mount base cabinets on stainless steel legs or a raised plinth, so splashing water drains away beneath them rather than soaking into the bottom edges. Leave a small drip gap at the bottom of the doors and raise the cabinet floors slightly so water does not pool inside.

The terrace floor should slope away from the kitchen to a drain sized for monsoon downpours, and that drain should connect to the villa's storm water system, not to the pool.

09

Keep the cook comfortable

A poolside kitchen in Phuket can be a hot place to stand at four in the afternoon, with the sun on one side and a grill on the other. An outdoor-rated ceiling fan over the work area makes a real difference, as long as it is placed so it does not blow out gas flames or push smoke towards the seating. Where the afternoon sun hits the counter directly, a retractable awning or a slatted screen on the west side cuts the heat without closing off the view.

Light-coloured worktops and cladding stay cooler to the touch than dark granite in direct sun. A sink with a pull-out spray, plus a separate tap nearby for rinsing hands and feet, keeps sand and pool water out of the food area.

10

Coordinate with the pool and landscape teams

An outdoor kitchen usually depends on several contractors: the builder, the pool company, the landscaper, the electrician and the kitchen maker. Problems appear when nobody owns the order of work.

Agree the kitchen layout first, then mark the water supply, drain, gas line and power cables on a shared drawing. Lay conduits and pipes before the paving and pool deck are finished, and photograph them before they are covered. Make sure pool equipment pipes, filter backwash lines and garden irrigation are not routed under the kitchen counter.

Trees and planting need thought too. Fruiting and flowering trees drop leaves and sap onto worktops, and roots can lift paving close to the counter over time. Send us the terrace plan and a few photos, and we will fit the kitchen around the other works.
