A kitchen on Phuket works in warm, humid air, often close to the sea. The parts you touch every day, and the boards behind them, need to be chosen for that climate.
Hinges and drawer runners
Choose quality hinges and runners with soft closing and a corrosion-resistant finish. They carry the weight of the fronts and the contents every day, so they are the last place to save money.
Handles, sinks and taps
Stainless steel and well-coated metals keep their surface in salt air. Check the finish of handles and taps, and choose a sink that is easy to dry and clean.
Boards, edges and worktops
Moisture enters a board through open edges and cut-outs. Ask for moisture-resistant boards, well-sealed edges and sealed openings around the sink and hob. Choose a worktop that tolerates water and heat.
Air and maintenance
Good ventilation and an extractor that removes steam protect the whole kitchen. Wipe metal parts dry and check hinges once a year: small adjustments keep doors aligned.
West-facing homes and monsoon spray
Homes on Phuket's west coast face the Andaman Sea, and during the southwest monsoon, roughly May to October, onshore wind carries salt spray further inland than many owners expect. Kitchens that open onto a terrace through large sliding doors get the full effect. In these houses, treat kitchen hardware almost as outdoor hardware: marine-grade stainless or well-anodised aluminium for anything exposed, and sealed or coated finishes rather than bare plated metal.
Position matters as well. Hardware on the run closest to the sliding door sees the most salt and humidity, so that is the place for the best finishes, not a place to save. On the more sheltered east side of the island, or in a condo away from the beach, good standard indoor hardware usually performs well with normal care.
Choosing drawer runners
Runners decide how a drawer feels for its whole life. Full-extension runners let you see the back of the drawer, which matters in deep pan drawers. Concealed runners mounted under the drawer look cleaner and keep dirt and sand off the moving parts better than side-mounted ball-bearing runners, which are visible when the drawer is open.
Check the load rating against the job. A cutlery drawer carries little, but a 90 cm pan drawer full of cast iron, or a drawer of bottles and tins, needs runners made for heavy loads. Ask what happens when a drawer is overloaded: good runners have a soft close that still works and easy height and side adjustment. In a house near the beach, sand gets into everything, so choose runners that can be lifted out and cleaned.
Lift-up doors and gas struts
Wall cabinets with lift-up doors are comfortable to use but rely on mechanisms with springs or gas struts. These are sized for the weight of the door, so a heavy glass or stone-look front needs a stronger fitting than a light laminate one. Ask for the mechanism to be matched to your actual fronts, with the opening force adjustable on site.
Heat and humidity shorten the life of cheaper gas struts, especially in a cabinet above the hob or near a window that gets afternoon sun. Mechanical lift systems with a spring and a stay-anywhere position tend to last longer and can be adjusted as they age. Keep the extractor running while you cook so steam does not condense inside the cabinets above it.
Under the sink
The cabinet under the sink is where most kitchens fail first, because water and hardware meet there every day. A sink waste and trap that are easy to reach and unscrew by hand make cleaning simple. Ask for an aluminium or plastic tray, or a waterproof mat, on the cabinet base, so a slow leak shows up as a puddle rather than a swollen board.
Shut-off valves for the tap and dishwasher should be visible and reachable without emptying the cabinet. If you use a drinking-water filter, as many households in Thailand do, plan its position and the extra tap hole before the worktop is cut, and leave room to change the cartridges. Hinges in this cabinet work in the dampest conditions, so they are the first ones to inspect each year.
A checklist for villa managers
If your Phuket villa is managed while you are away, give the manager a short hardware routine for changeover days. Open every door and drawer once: anything that drops, rubs or does not close softly needs a quarter turn on its adjustment screw. Wipe handles, taps and the sink dry, and look for rust spots on screws and hinge plates near the sink and the terrace door.
Once a month, empty and clean the drawer under the hob, where crumbs and grease collect on the runners, and check under the sink for drips. Ask the installer to show the manager how the hinges adjust at handover, which saves many service visits. For advice on hardware for your own kitchen, send the room measurements and a few photos.
