Choosing built-in appliances for your Phuket kitchen

Ovens, hobs, hoods and fridges shape the cabinets around them. Decide early and the kitchen fits perfectly on installation day.

Built-in appliances give a kitchen a clean, finished look, but every model has its own dimensions and installation needs. Choosing them early is the single best way to avoid delays and last-minute changes.

01

Hob and hood

Induction hobs are efficient, easy to clean and add less heat to the room, which matters in a tropical climate. Match the hood width to the hob and plan a ducted route outside where possible.

02

Ovens and steam ovens

A tall oven housing at eye level is easier to use than an oven under the hob. A combination steam oven is popular for healthy cooking and can replace a microwave.

03

Fridges and freezers

Integrated fridges disappear behind cabinet fronts, while freestanding American-style fridges need a wide space with ventilation. In hot climates, leave enough air space so the compressor works efficiently.

04

Dishwasher and laundry

Place the dishwasher next to the sink for easy plumbing. In smaller homes and condos, we can also integrate a washing machine or dryer into the kitchen design.

05

Send us your appliance list

Share model numbers or links for your chosen appliances. We design the cabinets around their exact sizes, so everything fits on installation day.

06

Power supply comes first

An induction hob, a built-in oven and a steam oven can draw a lot of power, sometimes all at once. Each should have its own dedicated circuit with the cable size and breaker given in the installation manual. Thailand runs on 220 to 230 volts, so check that any appliance bought overseas matches the local supply and has a suitable plug or connection.

Older villas and some condos in Phuket were wired for a gas hob and a small fridge. Before choosing a full set of electric appliances, ask an electrician to check that the main supply and consumer unit can carry the extra load. In a condo, check with the juristic office whether the unit's supply can be upgraded.

Voltage dips and spikes happen, especially during storms. A surge protector on the kitchen circuits protects the electronics in modern ovens, hobs and fridges.

07

Air gaps and cabinet ventilation

Built-in appliances push heat into the cabinets around them. Ovens need a gap behind or below for air to circulate, and integrated fridges usually need a ventilation path through the plinth and up behind the unit, or a vent at the top. These details are in the installation manual, and they change the size of the cabinet, not just the opening.

In Phuket's heat, an integrated fridge squeezed into a tight housing will run hot, use more power and wear out sooner. Ask your designer to show the vents on the drawings, and never block plinth grilles with solid kick boards later.

In condos, an external hood duct is not always allowed, so check with the juristic office first. If only recirculation is possible, choose good grease and carbon filters and make sure they are easy to reach and change.

08

Humidity, sea air and empty months

Phuket's humid, salty air is hard on electronics and metal. Stainless steel appliances near the coast need regular wiping to prevent brown tea staining, and touch controls last longer when the kitchen is ventilated rather than shut tight for long periods.

If you leave the villa or condo empty for part of the year, plan for it. Fridges and freezers that are switched off should be emptied, cleaned, dried and left with the door slightly open, or mould will grow inside. Leave the dishwasher door ajar too, and run it once with a cleaner when you return.

Appliances that stay on while you are away, such as a wine cooler or a fridge for the housekeeper, should sit on a protected circuit. Ask whoever looks after the property to check them after storms and power cuts.

09

Plan for service and replacement

Every appliance will need a repair or replacement one day, and on an island that can mean a long wait for parts. Before you buy, ask the seller whether the brand has service technicians covering Phuket and whether common parts are stocked in Thailand.

Design the cabinets so appliances can come out without damage. Integrated dishwashers and fridges should slide out once their fixing screws are removed, and ovens should sit in housings that do not need the worktop lifted. Keep a removable plinth in front of the dishwasher and water connections.

Where possible, stick to standard sizes such as 60 cm wide ovens and dishwashers. If a model is discontinued, a standard opening gives you many replacement choices, while an unusual size may force you to rebuild part of the kitchen.

10

Mistakes to avoid

The most expensive appliance mistake is changing a model after the cabinets are made. Even a few millimetres of difference in height or depth can mean a new housing. Fix your list and share the installation drawings with your designer before final drawings are approved.

Check how each door opens. A fridge door hinged against a side wall may not open far enough to pull out the crisper drawers, and an oven door beside a tall unit can clash with its handle. Make sure open dishwasher and oven doors do not block the same walkway.

Avoid placing an oven or hob directly beside a fridge, where heat makes the fridge work harder, and keep some free worktop next to the oven for hot dishes. If you send us your appliance list with room measurements and photos, we will check every opening before production.
